Dynamics of Consumer Demand for New Durable Goods

چکیده
This paper specifies and estimates a dynamic model of consumer preferences for new durable goods with persistent heterogeneous consumer tastes, rational expectations about future products and repeat purchases over time. Most new consumer durable goods, particularly consumer electronics, are characterized by relatively high initial prices followed by rapid declines in prices and improvements in quality. The evolving nature of product attributes suggests the importance of modeling dynamics in estimating consumer preferences. We estimate the model on the digital camcorder industry using a panel data set on prices, sales and characteristics. We find that dynamics are a very important determinant of consumer preferences and that estimated coefficients are more plausible than with traditional static models. We use the estimates to evaluate cost-of-living indices for new consumer goods and dynamic demand elasticities. ∗We thank Dan Ackerberg, Victor Aguirregabiria, Ana Aizcorbe, Rabah Amir, Lanier Benkard, Steve Berry, Sofronis Clerides, Simon Gilchrist, Avi Goldfarb, Igal Hendel, Kei Hirano, Firat Inceoglu, John Krainer, Ariel Pakes, Minsoo Park, Rob Porter, Jeff Prince, Pasquale Schiraldi, Andy Skrzypacz, Mo Xiao and seminar participants at several institutions for helpful comments; Haizhen Lin, Ryan Murphy, David Rapson, Alex Shcherbakov, and Shirley Wong for research assistance; and the NPD Group, ICR-CENTRIS, Ali Hortaçsu and Jeff Prince for providing data. A model of brand competition for durable goods supply chains in a dynamic framework
Game theory is an efficient tool to represent and conceptualize the problems concerning conflict and competition. In recent years and especially for durable products, competition between domestic and foreign brands for gaining market share has received a considerable attention. This paper study electronic commerce concepts by differential game theory and introduce a novel and comprehensive mode...
متن کاملDurable Goods and Sectoral Effects of Monetary Policy
High degree of interest sensitivity of durable goods is now a stylized fact in the literature of monetary policy. This literature, however, does not provide a clear and consensual explanation for the modalities of this stylized fact. In this paper, two independent empirical models are performed to shed more light on the cross-sectoral impacts of monetary policy. The results of first study indic...
متن کاملResearch Note - The Role of Production Lead Time and Demand Uncertainty in Marketing Durable Goods
F often have to make their production decisions under conditions of demand uncertainty. This is especially true for product categories such as automobiles and technology goods where the lead time needed for manufacturing forces firms to make production decisions well in advance of the selling season. Once the firm has produced the goods, the available production volume affects the firm’s subseq...
متن کاملAn Investigation of the Composition of Iran's Import Demand: Capital, Intermediate and Consumer Goods during 1978-2004
The objective of this study has been to develop a typical specification of the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) for Iranâs composition of imports including capital, intermediate and consumer goods. Accordingly, we first test the hypotheses that import demand is homothetic, homogeneous, symmetric, and depends on domestic prices. Then, we estimate the long-run elasticities of the composition o...
متن کاملDurable Goods and Consumption Durable Spending, Relative Prices and Consumption
Real annual consumption growth has averaged about 3.7% between 1998 Q1 and 2003 Q3—well above real average annual GDP growth of about 2.6% during that period. (2) Chart 1 shows that the buoyancy of consumer spending can be entirely accounted for by strong growth in durable and semi-durable goods expenditure (henceforth referred to as 'durable spending' unless otherwise specified). Since 1998 Q1...
